Challenges Faced by Freed Bonded Labor Communities in Nepal: Insights from the World Social Forum 2024

The panel discussion held at the World Social Forum 2024  (February 15 to February 19) in Kathmandu, Nepal, shed light on the ongoing struggles of freed bonded labor communities in the country. Representatives from marginalized groups, including Kamaiya, Kamlari, Haliya, and Harawa-Charawa, shared their experiences and highlighted pressing issues even after legal emancipation.

Kamaiya: Ms. Sima Chaudhary emphasized the lack of government initiatives in resettling freed Kamaiyas. She stressed the importance of proper action plans and the provision of identity cards.

Kamlari: Ms. Hiramati Chaudhary discussed the unique challenges faced by the Kamlari community. Advocacy for their rights and effective implementation of rehabilitation plans were key points.

Haliya: Mr. Ishwor Sunar highlighted the plight of Haliya communities, emphasizing the need for integrated laws and basic human rights.

Harawa-Charawa: Ms. Rajamati Mandal echoed similar sentiments regarding the Harawa-Charawa community, focusing on issues related to citizenship, education, and employment.

Educational Opportunities: Mr. Pashupati Chaudhary raised concerns about risky resettlement locations for freed Kamaiyas. He advocated for educational opportunities through loans.

Governmental Support and Land Rights: Guests Arjun Bhattarai and JB Bishwokarma emphasized the importance of governmental support, bottom-up approaches, and land rights for freed laborers.

Audience Engagement: Queries from individuals like Mr. Kuchha Narayan Chaudhary underscored the urgency of addressing these issues.

A writer and researcher Mr. JB BK and a general secretary of an NGO federation Mr. Arjun Bhattrai were the other two panelists in the program. Purple Foundation oversaw the initiative, which was collaboratively put together by nine organizations combating modern slavery.

The panel discussion provided a platform for critical dialogue on the challenges faced by freed bonded labor communities in Nepal and underscored the imperative for concerted action from both governmental and societal stakeholders to ensure their rights and resettlement.
